Career

Born in 1999 in Krasnodar. A graduate of the "Krasnodar" academy. Has been playing for the main team since 2017. In 2020 became the captain of "Krasnodar" (at 21 years old!). In 2023 transferred to "PSG" for 20 million euros (the most expensive goalkeeper from Russia). Since 2021 — the main goalkeeper of the Russian national team. In 2026 — participant of the World Cup (if Russia is admitted).

Safonov is one of the few Russians who successfully play in a top championship.

Playing Style

Footwork: excellent ball control (can pass a ball 30 meters). Exit from the goal: dauntlessly goes for intercept. Reaction: fast, especially on follow-ups. Play on the line: reliable, but sometimes misses unnecessary goals. Psychology: calm, does not panic. Charisma: talks with the defense, leads.

Weaknesses: sometimes delays with the exit, there are losses of concentration.

Achievements

With "Krasnodar" — silver of the Russian championship (2021, 2022). With "PSG" — champion of France (2024, 2025), winner of the Coupe de France (2025). Personally: Best goalkeeper of Russia (2021, 2022, 2023). Participant of the Champions League (twice). In 2025 recognized as the second goalkeeper of the year in France after Donnarumma.

Comparison with Legends

Safonov is compared with Igor Akinfeev (the same calm, reliable). But Akinfeev was more charismatic. Compare with Manuel Neuer (footwork, exits). But Safonov is inferior to the German in speed. He is a typical modern goalkeeper who can catch and pass. The main difference: Safonov is a right-handed, but plays well with the left foot.

Future

In 2026, Safonov is 27 years old — the peak of his career. He will be the main goalkeeper in the national team at the 2026 World Cup (if Russia is admitted).
