ACADEMICIAN S. L. TIKHVINSKY. The January 1987 Plenary Meeting of the CC CPSU and the Science of History
Discusses how the current reforms in the USSR can be applied to the science of history. Analyses the negative and stagnation phenomena accumulated in the 1970s and 1980s. Emphasises the importance of studying the experience of socialist construction, deepening the theoretical and methodological foundations and the historiographic aspects of research, widening the source basis and improving the methodology. Much space is given to the problem of training young historians.
G. A. KOVALEV. Sovinformburo in the Great Patriotic War
Looks at the activity of the Soviet Information Bureau (Sovinformburo) during the Great Patriotic War (1941 - 1945). Discusses the nature of information transmitted by the Bureau, shows that much attention was paid to propaganda abroad, to exposing fascist slander and to highlighting the heroic war effort of the Soviet Union. The author concludes that Sovinformburo made a weighty contribution to the great victory.
M. G. SEDOV. The Study of Dobrolyubov's Heritage in the Past and Today
It is a historiographic survey of the major works about Nikolai Dobrolyubov. Sedov concentrates on the correlation between Dobrolyubov's ideas and the teaching of Chernyshevsky, he offers his own views on how the role of Dobrolyubov in shaping the ideology of revolutionary-democrats was assessed. Much attention is paid to the Soviet works written in the 1930s. Points to the unsolved problems in studying Dobrolyubov's heritage.
Kh. M . VAINU. Finland's Withdrawal from the Second World War
Shows how Finland's foreign-policy course oriented towards anti-Sovietism, underestimation of the Soviet might, reliance on the imperialist states and manoeuvring between the imperialist groupings collapsed in 1943 - 1944. These were the years when the post-war foreign-policy course took shape aimed at good-neighbourly relations with the USSR and meeting the vital needs of the Finnish people.
