Coccyx, vel coccygea ossa, est parvus triangularis segmentum vertebrae, consistens ex tribus quinque ossis vertebrae coalescentium. Multo tempore in medio scientifico consideratus est exemplum classice rudimentum — organi, quod amissum suum significatum primum in evolutione. Ad coccyx adhaerent partes musculorum, levantibus anum, et musculum coccygeum, quod participat in sustentatione tonus fundi pelvis. Disruptione integritatis vel positionis coccyxus, supportum huius debilitatur et promovet tales problemata, sicut incontinentia urinaria vel descensio organorum.

Stabilisatio in positione sedentia

Quando homo sedet, specialiter recumbens retro vel parvum inclinans, pars ponderis corporis transferatur in coccyxum et ossa ischiadica. Coniunctim formant triangulum sustentationis stabilis, qui stabilisat corpus in positione sedentia. Haec functio fit specialiter notabilis in traumatibus coccyxus (coccydynia), cum sedentia causat dolorem acutus et homo instinctu in positionem qua removet regionem laesam quaerit, exempli gratia, ut utilis cushiona cum foro in centro.

Participatio in biomechanica ambulationis et parturitionis

Coccyx ludet certam, quamvis limitatam, rollum in biomechanica. Est pars structurae pelvis communis et participat in distributione ponderis in ambulatione. Ad plus, coccyx habet parvum motum. In parturitione feminis potest recedere retro, parvum augmentans diametrum viarum parturitionis et facilitans passage capitis infantis. Haec motus est sustentata articulatio coccygeo-sacralis, qua senectute frequenter ossificatur.

Ita, coccyx non est simpliciter "residuum caudae", sed elementum anatomice multifunctionale. Est punctum sustentationis clavem musculorum fundi pelvis, sustinet stabilitatem in positione sedentia et contribuit in biomechanica pelvis. eius studium ostendit clare, quomodo evolution non solum dejectat structuras inutiles, sed saepe invenit illis novum, adaptativum usum in mutatis conditionibus vitae organismi.
