Contrary to the horror stories about the harm of smoking, teenagers still pick up cigarettes. Vapes, IQOS, and e-cigarettes have only complicated the situation. Why do children start smoking in 2026? It is almost always a complex of factors.
By the age of 12-14, belonging to a group becomes more important than health. If the company smokes, not to smoke means to become a "black sheep". A teenager smokes to avoid being teased. Also, smoking is perceived as an attribute of coolness: "I am grown-up, I can afford nicotine."
Smoking parents, older brothers, bloggers who smoke on camera (even vapes) — all these are models of behavior. If the father smokes and does not fall dead, cognitive dissonance does not arise in the child.
Teens experience immense stress: exams, first love, bullying. Smoking gives the illusion of relaxation (nicotine actually excites the nervous system, but the ritual of the drag works as a placebo). "A smoke break" becomes a legal way to get out of class and take a breath.
In 2026, teenagers start not with cigarettes, but with POD systems (single-use vapes) with sweet flavors. They seem harmless. Then it turns out that it's sad without nicotine.
How to fight? Banning is useless. You need to set a personal example (not to smoke yourself), talk without moralizing, and provide legal ways to relieve stress (sports, hobbies).
